The idea behind Sebsky Tools

Sebsky Tools can of cause be used for simple conversion of batch lists. However, one of the goals for Sebsky Tools is to help enable a workflow where a project can be edited using Avid and FCP at the same time. The Avid system holds all the media involved, and selected clips are transfered to FCP as QuickTime files and batch lists. After editing, sequences from FCP are brought back into Avid, either as an EDL, AAF- or as omfi composition*. After import, the sequence gets relinked to the original media files in Avid and is ready to be cut into a larger context, or can be further refined in Avid. One of the benefits of relinking is that you can match frame to the original clips in Avid. Depending on which method used to transfer edited sequences from FCP to Avid - EDLs or omfi compositions* - there are some manual work left; audio levels, visual FX and graphics needs to be rebuild in Avid, but the basic timeline is there.
One of the obstacles using this workflow regards media files. Avid and FCP can not share raw media files directly. Avid can, however, export QuickTime files directly from its bins. This certainly gets you a long way, but when these files are imported into FCP they lack timecode and source information - reel name. This means that to FCP all clips start at 00:00:00:00 and has no reel name. The only option has been to enter the timecode and reel name manually in FCP - a very slow and error prone process.

This is where Sebsky Tools kicks in:

Sebsky Tools can add timecode to QuickTime files exported from Avid with the help of an ALE file. When you export QuickTime files from bins in Avid, you must also export the bin as an ALE file. This file contains all timecode, reel name, auxiliary timecode information etc. that is displayed in Avids bin-window. When the QuickTime files contains a correct timecode track, you import or reconnect the movie in FCP. The timecode and Source ID of the clip is then maintained throughout your work, and it is possible to either export frame accurate EDLs and omfi compositions*, or recapture the clip from tape in FCP for online work.

* To export an omfi-composition from FCP you need the Automatic Sequence Export Pro plug-in from Automatic Duck available at www.automaticduck.com .
